TWIN STAR EXORCISTS-DARK COLOR VILLIANS – OWLS BLOG TOUR “COLORS”

image

Well the Owls are kicking ass and this is our 4th month of tours. I am super happy I am part of this group. Well it’s my turn again for the Blog Tour. The theme this month is Colors.

Colors: We are all part of one race, the human race. “Colors” refers to people of color in anime. For this monthly topic, we will be discussing how people of color or characters of different “races” (a literal alien race) are represented in anime. Some topics we are considering are the dangers stereotyping bi-racial characters, and the importance of “inclusion”.

We are all interpreting colors through different anime and our own unique take on it.

I actually want to talk about color in anime as in race. Just like the definition says I’m going to talk about race plus about the characters of color in Twin Star Exorcists.

TWIN STAR EXORCISTS (Sōsei no Onmyōji)

The story is about a 14 year old boy Rokuro who has many dreams, but one of them is not becoming an exorcist. He grew up in a house with many exorcists including his best friend Ryogo. They all believe he can be a great exorcist one day, but Rokuro just does not have that goal in life.

One day while he is out he runs into a mysterious girl the same age as him named Benio. He soon finds out that she is an exorcist when they transport into Magano which is a realm of Kegare (evil spirit monsters).

After their encounter, Rokuro and Benio both soon find out that they are The Twin Star Exorcists and are suited to marry. They are fated to have the prophesied child who will be the most powerful exorcist ever. Benio and Rokuro are both against this fate. Especially Rokuro because he has other goals in mind especially not to marry Benio or to become an exorcist.

I like this anime a lot because it is your basic Shounen anime. Rokuro is funny and had a goal to become the best exorcist when he was younger. But due to a tragic situation as a kid he stirred away from his dream. After he meets Benio and they become more connected as exorcists his whole attitude changes where he wants to become a great exorcist again.

CHARACTERS OF COLOR

Now back to the theme topic of this month, since I am a black female, I always love to see characters of color in anime. It is not a common thing because it is not part of the Japanese culture to have characters of color in their series. But when they do I am excited and happy.

I did a post last year that was based on characters of color in anime. It became really popular last year to see so many diverse characters in many series. Plus there were other series that I like a lot that had some diversity as well. Series like Black Lagoon with Dutch, Bleach with Yoruichi, Michiko and Hatchin almost the whole cast, Black Butler with Prince Sōma and Agni, Dimension W with Salva and Food Wars with my Husband Akira Hayama just to name a few.

Twin Star Exorcists was one of the series I’ve watched that had a diverse group with characters of color. Now, the thing is this, when I actually really paid attention to the characters of color in Twin Star Exorcists I began to realize they were all the antagonists of the series called Basara.

Basara: is an evolved and humanoid impurity that has absorbed the powers from exorcists by killing them. When they absorbed enough, they turn into a Basara regaining human form and the human speech.

In twin star exorcists, Rokuro and Benio fight the Basara in the Magano world. They are the most powerful demons compared to the Kegare. They have special powers plus Intelligence that they can operate in a different manner compared to the mindless Kegare. The Basara are the human form of the demons compared to the Kegare who are monster and creature forms. But one thing I began to notice about these antagonist characters is that they are all of darker complexion. (Refer to images above)

I admire these characters because they have great characteristics behind them, they are extremely strong and they add great content to the story. But to have your antagonist all be of a darker complexion made me think hmmm are they persuaded by media of how they portray darker people.

MEDIA AND RACE

Let’s face it, in the media people of color are usually portrayed in a negative way. In many movies, television series and the News. Showing them as being from the urban neighborhoods to the arrests made on tv and etc. The last two years in America we had a huge protest for Black Lives matters because cops were killing innocent people of color.

When I visited my friend in South Africa, I met her friend who told me in their media they portray “black people” to be usually aggressive, sometimes unsuccessful and uneducated. Many of the people I work with say the same thing in their country it goes the same way. I do find this to be upsetting and wrong. My family growing up were called the Cosby family because we were well educated and we didn’t grow up in an urban environment. Kids tried to tease me because my upbringing was different than theirs. I use to be called white girl because when I spoke it wasn’t the so called “urban way” like people expect all black people to speak. I feel we type cast people of color and I think it’s wrong.

There are many successful people of color that are in high positions in companies, school systems, and shoot we just had a Black President. If we can promote more of the positive images maybe the other world will not see us in a negative light. I am happy we have shows like Scandal, How to get away with Murder and Blackish that show us in a positive light.

Back in the 80s when The Cosby show came out (before the Bill Cosby scandal) it received a lot of negative attention in the beginning because they were portraying blacks as being very successful. The dad was a doctor and the mom was a lawyer. Many people criticized saying that can never happen why are they doing this. But the show became very successful that it was the most successful show in the 80s.

Then in the 90s we had The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which had a black family “The Banks” that were from a rich neighborhood. They lived in a mansion and they had snobbish ways about them, except for Will of course. But again it was good to see a family that wasn’t the typical stereotype of what the media tries to portray ethnic people.

Things have really changed a lot since the 90s when almost every movie was about ghetto urban school kids who were uneducated needed a white person to come in and help them succeed and become better. Or every movie was about the hood and the violence. Which I did appreciate those because there are a lot of neighborhoods out there like that but let’s have a balance and have equal amount of films where we are also successful.

We need to have more shows and movies that can help put the positive images out there, show the world that people of color can be well educated, not always “ghetto” as they say it and not violent as well.

BASARA CREATIVE PROCESS ? 🤔

Now back to Twin Star Exorcists, I wonder what was going through the creative thought process of making the antagonists all of darker complexion. Were they influenced by the media because darker means bad? Or do they find darker complexion to be more aggressive for their antagonist?

There are many factors that could have been played into their creative process. I am not here to bash the series at all because of this choice they made. I just find it kind of interesting on their creative idea. I still watch the series because I find it very entertaining.

Maybe in a positive light, they may have thought the darker complexion was cool with the white and pink hair they have. Which it totally does.

In other anime series the characters of color are usually either good or bad. They have a diverse roles. But to have a whole series where all the bad characters are dark complexion is rather interesting.

I hope, maybe later in the series they may change up their design and start to create new creatures with other ethnic roles or different skin tones. I know they didn’t mean any harm and again I do enjoy the show. But it was something that had to be addressed.

TWIN STAR EXORCISTS : NEW TRIAL UNBELIEVABLE GAME – EPISODE 7 REVIEW

image

SYNOPSIS: The story is about a 14 year old boy Rokuro who has many dreams, but one of them is not becoming an exorcist. He grew up in Seika dormitory with many exorcists including his best friend Ryogo. They all believe he can be a great exorcist one day, but Rokuro just does not have that goal in life.

Benio is a 14 year old girl who is also an exorcist and is determined to become the strongest exorcist there is. Benio is sent to live in the same dormitory that Rokuro stays in.
Rokuro and Benio both soon find out that they are The Twin Star Exorcists and are suited to marry. They are fated to have the prophesied child who will be the most powerful exorcist ever.

EPISODE 7 SUMMARY

This episode Rokuro and Benio are summoned by Arima who takes them away on a trial to be tested. Arima drives them to an luxurious Villa he use to own. Little does Rokuro and Benio know they are going to be living together alone.

Once they are moved in Arima immediately sets a test in motion for them. The floors and walls all start to move. To make everything go back to normal they must complete a test together without using their talisman and they must use their physical strength all while depending on each other. You start to see the relationship between Rokuro and Benio blossom.

When they are almost finished with their test they receive a call from the other exorcist needing help fighting a kegare. After they complete the test they are then seen coming to the rescue and killing off the kegare together. Rokuro realizes Benio is missing her hair tie. Benio begins to freak out because her brother gave her the hair tie. Rokuro take Benio back to the villa where he finds her hair tie. Benio and Rokuro then are seen in the living room where Benio tells Rokuro about her past and brother. After the story they go back to the way they were with the smart remarks. Haha

MY THOUGHTS:

I can say this episode was very different than the others. I liked the simplicity of the story. I appreciated seeing the characters putting their pride aside and working together to accomplish a goal. I also liked that you see their relationship growing and becoming something more than just the back and forth arguments they always have. My favorite part is Benio opening up to Rokuro about her past with her brother. I can say I really enjoyed this episode a lot.

SPRING 2016 FAV AND LEAST FAV ANIME

image

It’s the spring time and it is the birth of new life as well as new anime. Many people have wrote about the spring seasons. But I’m writing my own thoughts. I don’t know how I have time to watch all this new anime but I find a way. Hahah
MY FAVORITE

BUNGOU STRAY DOGS – (Bungō Sutorei Doggusu) 3 episodes

Nakajima was kicked out of his orphanage and left on the street starving. He decides to rob the next person that walks by him. Instead he sees a man drowning in the river and saves him. The man he saves is named Dazai who is suicidal, then comes along Kunikida who is writing in a notepad. They are both members of the Armed Detective Agency. This agency is a special task force that handles crimes that the police or military can not handle. This agency’s members all have special powers. Due to Nakajima saving Dazai and getting to know each other Nakajima soon joins the agency. We also find out that Nakajima has powers as well.
THOUGHTS:

I really like this anime, it is hilarious, supernatural and a cool storyline. The first two episodes you are getting to know each of the characters, you see the hilarious side to them. Then Episode three it gets real. They go to battle. You then find out the main plot of the storyline. I can not wait to see how this turns out.

TWIN STAR EXORCISTS (Sōsei no Onmyōji) 3 episodes

The story is about a 14 year old boy Rokuro who has many dreams, but one of them is not becoming an exorcist. He grew up in a house with many exorcists including his best friend Ryogo. They all believe he can be a great exorcist one day, but Rokuro just does not have that goal in life.

Especially Rokuro because he has other goals in mind especially not to marry Benio or to become an exorcist.
THOUGHTS:

I’ve been reading the manga before the anime came out. It’s not doing so bad staying true to the manga. I like this series because I am a fan of Shounen anime. I can’t get enough. The typical boy that doesn’t want to do something but they are really good at it. Many people try to convince him to do it, then finally he gets into it again. Typical story but I love it. It’s funny and action packed. I’m just happy to see the manga come to life.

JOKER GAME (Jōkā Gēmu) 3 episodes

In 1937 the beginning of world world II, the D agency is secretly established by Lt. Yuuki of the Imperial Army. The D agency consists of civilian university graduates who aces the superhuman selection test. These members are spies who go undercover to expose and steal information to help their country win the war.
THOUGHTS:

I am a sucker for spy genres. I don’t know what it is about spies but I love them. When I saw the posters for this I knew right away I was going to love it. And when I watched the first episode I was hooked. The characters are all mysterious and cool. I like how this show is like a real game. I love the fact it takes place during World War II. It has so many stories they can come up with especially with how many countries that were involved in the war. Definitely a must watch.
NOT SURE YET

HUNDRED (Handoreddo) 3 episodes

On Earth there are mysterious life forms called Savages attacking the planet. Hundred is the only weapon that can destroy these savages.
Hayato is a teen boy that enters the battleship university to hopefully become a slayer. He becomes friends with Emile who reminds him of a past memory. On his first day he gets in to trouble and is challenged to a duel by the top fighter at the school the Queen.
Hayato’s new friend Emile practices with him to teach him how to use his hundred.
During his fight with the Queen, Hayato showcases special skills that a first time user shouldn’t have.
THOUGHTS:

Not sure about this series because I like the characters, I like the fighting scenes and I love the female’s outfits. But this series kind of reminds me of Asterisk Wars. The storyline kind of doesn’t grab me like other anime. I guess I will continue watching and I will see what happens.

KIZNAIVER (Kizunaībā) 3 episodes

Agata Katsuhira is a high school teen who is unable to feel pain. He was constantly beaten up growing up. But he still didn’t feel any pain. One day a classmate Tenga comes to his rescue and saves him from the bullies. One day Katsuhira is approached by a mysterious emotionless girl named Noriko who tells him that he was selected to become a Kiznaiver because he is unable to feel pain.
They then both connect through Kizuna which allows them to feel each other’s pain. Soon he is then connected with 7 fellow classmates who lives would never link. They all become Kiznaivers.
The goal for Kizuna is to create a peaceful world connecting people through. If one Kiznaiver is wounded the other Kiznaivers feel the pain as well.

THOUGHTS:

The first two episodes had me like hmmm I don’t know about this. It seemed interesting but kind of slow paced for me. I didn’t really care for any characters except Katsuhira and Noriko. Then the Third episode was really good and had me reconsider. I have another character I like Yoshiharu. He seems super cool and mysterious. So I will keep this in my not sure section until I see more episodes.

HAVEN’T YOU HEARD? I’M SAKAMOTO (Sakamoto desu ga) 2 episodes

Sakamoto is not your typical high school student. He is very handsome, extremely smart, and popular with the girls. Many of the male students do not like this. The males try every trick in the book to take down Sakamoto. But no matter what they do Sakamoto always gets out of every trick and looks cool no matter what.
THOUGHTS:

Sakamoto is definitely a great and good looking guy. The show is very funny. But I feel like it will not going anywhere besides that. I do laugh when I watch it because I can’t help it. But I won’t name it the best anime,
LEAST FAVORITE

FLYING WITCH (Furaingu Uitchi) 3 episodes

15 year old Makoto is a flying witch who leaves her town Yokohama with her black cat Chito. she moves to Aomori to live with her cousin Kei and Chinatsu. Makoto has limited powers. While there she continues to train being a witch.
THOUGHTS:

I am not really that much of a fan of Slice of Life. I can watch a few and enjoy it. But this series is just pointless. It has no goal to the storyline. Nothing is being accomplished. It’s not even funny. Makoto comes to town and then what? Nothing! The only thing I enjoy in the series is Chinatsu’s reaction to all the strange things happening around her. I’m going to continue watching but I don’t know how long I can hang on.

ACE ATTORNEY (Phoenix Wright and Gyakuten Saiban) 4 episodes

Naruhodō is a rookie lawyer who takes on a homicide case for his first case. We find out the defendant is an old childhood friend of his. He owes him a favor because if it wasn’t for him he would have never become a lawyer. This series follow Naruhodō in the courtroom proving he can become a great lawyer.
THOUGHTS:

This series is back and forth for me. The first episode I was kind of interested. It seemed really good. It was different and it was based on lawyers. After the first episode it went down hill from there. Every episode they are finger pointing. Then everything is way over the top. The story took a twist but it wasn’t a really good twist. Plus Naruhodō wins every case. I’ll continue watching but I really hope it gets better.

THE LOST VILLAGE (Mayoiga) 4 episodes

A group of 30 men and women head out on a bus tour to head to a village called Nanakimura. This group is on this tour to leave their old lives to live a new life in Nanakimura. Nanakimura is considered an urban legend. When they arrive to this village it is vacant. Strange things begin to happen.
THOUGHTS:

I was all for this anime when I saw the poster. It looked so interesting. Then I watch, and let’s just say I am very disappointed. It just doesn’t have the suspense I thought it would have. There are way too many characters too keep up with. I have my favorites but they do not get enough screen time because they are too busy giving all 30 characters screen time. Let’s just say very disappointed.

Which spring anime are you watching? And which ones are your favorites?
