I feel like I have a grip on which anime I like and dislike so far for the summer 2016 season. Here are my thoughts!
FOOD WARS – THE SECOND PLATE – 6 episodes
Food wars follows a boy named Sōma Yukihira who grew up in his father, Jōichiro Yukihira’s restaurant. His father taught him all about cooking and they would compete against each other in cooking battles. Every time Sōma would lose. Hahah One day Sōma’s father receives a job to cook abroad and around the world. So he closes shop and then enrolls Sōma in to an elite culinary school where only 10% of students manage to graduate. Here at this school Sōma meets many student who are all skilled at cooking. Many of them each specializing in something specific for cooking such a meat, curry, Italian cuisine and etc. While in the school the kids are faced with many cooking challenges and battles as well. You witness Sōma developing as a chef and reaching his goal of becoming better than his father one day.
I was excited that Food wars was confirmed for a second season. I loved the first season and this season has not disappointed yet. The food is looking more amazing and the battles seem more intense. Yukihiro is just as tough and skilled as ever. This is definitely a must watch.
BERSERK – 6 episodes
Guts is known as the black swordsman who is on a quest for revenge. Throughout his quest we see many crazy outlaws, evil spirits and the devout child of God. Guts encounters many of them fighting his way to get to the end of his quest to accomplish his revenge.
The funny thing about this show was I didn’t want to watch it. It looked too brute. But when I gave it a chance I am obsessed. I am so upset I have to wait a week for the next episode. Guts is such a man’s man. I love his anger and the way he fights. The fighting scenes are so intense. I love the old medieval time of the anime. It has a historical background to this due to the church which is not far from the truth of what happened in real life.
Anime: The Mororse Mononokean (Fukigen Na Mononokean) Genre: Supernatural, Comedy, Shounen
THE MOROSE MONONOKEAN – 5 episodes
Hanae Ashiya is just beginning high school, but his first few days were missed because he was haunted by a yokai. He decides to seek help from an exorcist and finds the contact info of the Mononokean and visits him. He meets Itsuki who is a young boy like him. Itsuki helps exorcise the yokai and Hanae is able to go back to school as a normal kid. The only problem is he is now in debt to Itsuki and becomes his employee. Hanae helps Itsuki exorcise yokai to the underworld to help pay off his debt.
This show is just so cute and funny. I love Hanae because he is so naive and too caring. He wants to help all the yokai. I like the funny relationship between Hanae and Itsuki. This is not the best show ever but it is a funny show that keeps you interested.
Anime: Mob Psycho 100 Genre: Action, Supernatural, Comedy, Shounen, Slice of Life
MOB PSYCHO 100 – 4 episodes
Mob is a powerful esper who doesn’t know how to emote his feelings. He wants to live a normal life so he suppresses his powers. When his emotions began to surge to 100% he releases a lot of power. He is surrounded by many fake espers, evil spirits and a mysterious organization. It is really hard for him to keep control of his powers.
Now I loved One Punch Man. When it is subtitled, dubbed was not funny at all. Now this show is from the same creators and they didn’t fail me with this one. You can’t help but laugh because the character Mob is so nonchalant. He just goes with the flow. I also like how they count down to when he is going to explode and do something crazy with his powers. His partner Is such a doofus but you can’t help but laugh. The artistic style is def different than other anime. But I feel like it fits with this show well. This show is good if you are into comedy.
NOT SURE YET
91 DAYS – 5 episodes
91 days is about a guy named Avilio who receives a letter which makes him go to the city called lawless. He goes to seek revenge against the Mafia organization who killed his Family when he was a kid.
I was so excited for this show to come out. It was all I was talking about. Now that the show is here I am not sure how I feel. It has some good parts. I love the 1920s and the prohibition time, the gangsters and revenge plot. But I feel like I’m not yearning to see the next episode. I’m just watching it to watch it. I’m still going to keep watching but we will see.
D GRAY MAN – HALLOW – 5 episodes
D Gray Man follows a boy named Allen Walker (super hot) who is an exorcist. He is part of an organization of exorcists that use a substance called innocence to fight an army of Akuma ruined by Millennium Earl.
Another one I was excited to see because I liked the original D Gray Man. The first episode I was like WTF. It was slow and nothing happened. Then it started to get interesting the next few episodes. I’m still waiting to decide if I like it or not. So it’s in my not sure yet list.
HITORI NO SHITA THE OUTCAST – 5 episodes
Cho Soran is a typical college student. He goes to a small village to visit his grandfather’s grave but when there he is attacked by zombies. He is then saved by a mysterious girl with a sword. Everything begins to change in Cho’s normal life. Normality is no longer.
This series has so much potential to become something really good. But it just hasn’t hit it yet. So I’m still waiting for some thing to happen. The plot and storyline can be so good but it’s taking forever to get there. Maybe it will get there but I don’t know. But come on its taking too many episodes.
TABOO TATTOO – 5 episodes
Justice Atatsuka saves a man who is getting mugged by a teen boy. The man awards justice with a stone that implants a tattoo on his hand. Tattoos are ancient weapons that enhance the physical abilities of its owner. They are activated when the individual uses its own unique trigger to release the phenom powers. Justice now has this tattoo and is now teaming up with an organization that is looking for all tattoo users.
This is another series where I am watching and interested but they are not utilizing their characters. The storyline/plot again has so much potential but it’s taking forever to get there. So after the next episode if nothing becomes any better I will have to probably say it’s in the least favorite anime.
REWRITE – 5 episodes
Green City Kazamatsuri is about to have their annual Harvest Festa. It’s a massive school festival. Kotaro decides to do research on topics for his article. It becomes difficult because the town is rumored to have sightings of unidentified creatures and occult occurrences. Eventually strange things begin to happen to Kotaro.
I kind of dropped this anime. The first scene of the show was the best scene. I thought it was going to be a gore anime. But then it turned out to be something completely different. At first when Kotaro has the special powers I was like this is cool. But then he was doing other stuff like trying to touch the president’s breast I was like I’m over it. It’s just confusing of a story to me.
QUALIDEA CODE – 4 episodes
In Qualdiea code the world is at war with creatures called unknown. When they first invaded many kids are evacuated to a cold sleep facility where they went into a slumber. When the kids woke up they gained powers called world. Now with these new powers the kids are ordered to fight the unknown and protect the many areas of Tokyo, Kanagawa and Chiba.
Another anime that can be so much more, but they reached their limit for their characters. There is no growth in character but only the main character iicchan. But you can’t grow to love the other characters. I do like Chiba because he is so truthful and don’t give a what! Hahah but the fighting scenes with the unknown is so boring. I wish it was better.
Anime: Orange Genre: Sci-fi, Drama, Shoujo, School, Romance
ORANGE – 5 episodes
Naho is a high school student in her second year. She receives a letter from her future self 10 years in the future. Naho believes the letter is a prank until all the events written in the letter begin to occur. Naho’s future self has regrets of letting a classmate she loves Kakeru die. She wants to change events to keep him alive and do things differently in her younger days.
I can’t stand the main character. I just do not like timid characters. Naho is so timid and passive that It drives me crazy. Like get over your passiveness and save Kakeru. You know what is going to happen to him so try and do better than what you did before. Sorry but this show gets me upset. I’m only watching to see what the outcome will be.
Anime: Days Genre: Sports, Shounen, School
DAYS – 5 episodes
Days follows Tsukushi Tsukamoto who is clumsy, non athletic and an unskilled boy who made it on the high school soccer team. We see his drive and passion to become a better player. Then you have Jin Kazama who is a natural born soccer player. We see these two become friends and work together as teammates.
I recently started to watch sports anime and this sports anime does not have the intensity as other sports anime. It’s boring and the main character is weak and annoying. Like come on he has heart but in real life he wouldn’t have been on the soccer team. It’s about skills when it comes to teams. Having heart goes but so far. I get they want to influence others to have heart but you still need skills.
Which shows are you watching and what are your thoughts?
