REVIEW

Bleach was one of the old big three next to Naruto and One Piece. It was one of those long series with 366 episodes. This is one of my favorite classic anime. Watching season one was nostalgic. I forgot how awesome it was, introducing us to Ichigo and his journey in life, that changed forever when he met Rukia.

STORYLINE

The story is unique in its own way. They took something that would be scary like spirits and ghost and made it interesting. The lost souls and the corrupted souls (Hollows) was a great way of introducing the viewer to the afterlife.

Ichigo having a special ability to see ghost and then meeting a soul reaper, Rukia, was classic. He didn’t believe in soul reapers but he did believe in ghost. Then throwing a hollow in the mix was great. It opened Ichigo’s eyes that there is more to the world as he knows it.

The soul reapers powers to cross lost souls to the soul society or to kill Hollows was great. Makes you wonder, what if our world consisted of soul reapers would there be demons that haunted people?

The story also explains some of the characters background stories, such as Ichigo losing his mother, Orihime’s brother dying when she was younger, Chad realizing he was different ever since he was a kid and Uryu being a quince and hating soul reapers because they killed his Sensei. It was mapped out perfectly throughout the series. It helped you understand the characters.

Then the final part of the story that Rukia broken a cardinal rule in the Soul Society and must face execution.

I can not see a flaw in this story.

PACE

The pace of this season was great. There were no boring moments. There were no moments that felt like it was dragging. The action came at the right time. The non-action scenes were great because you get to learn about the storyline or about the characters background. Everything was set just right.

CHARACTER

The characters are all unique and great in their own way.

Ichigo, who was my favorite, was like most typical teen boys. He was short tempered, always scowling and yet still cared for his friends and family. I loved his relationship with his family, he treated his dad so mean and yet showed much love to his younger twin sisters.

When the hollow attacked his family, he was determined to protect his sisters by all means. When he gained his soul reaper powers he became cocky, but in a good way, and he was ready to protect humans from Hollows.

Ichigo was a cool character and yet he had his funny corky moments. He was the epitome of a lead character and hero.

Rukia’s character is what I wish more anime female characters were like. She is cute and yet can hold her own in a fight. She isn’t helpless and though she lost her soul reaper powers, she still continued to fight Hollows.

What I loved about Rukia was she can be super serious one moment and then become kind of goofy the next. I liked when she had to be a human and go to school with Ichigo. She played the super cute and sweet girl in front of the other students, but when she was with Ichigo alone she was back to her serious/kind of mean self.

When Renji and her brother Byakuya came to the human world to retrieve her, I felt for her. It was hard to hear she will be executed for something she couldn’t control.

Rukia was definitely a great character for this series.

The supporting characters were all great too. They each contribute something to the series. From Uryu and his anger for soul reapers, then coming around to like Ichigo and working alongside of him. Orihime potentially being Ichigo’s love interest. Also, she isn’t so annoying in season one. (FYI she becomes extremely annoying in the later seasons) Chad playing an important role when he helped Rukia fight a hollow also, he protected a spirit of a young boy that was stuck in a parakeets body.

Urahara is one of my favorites, he is such an eccentric character and seems weird to some but he is extremely intelligent. Many times he comes out of no where, but he is always there to help. He helps the characters through this season many times. With his crazy gang at the shop they play an important role. He is a character you can’t help but love. He is a character you want to know more about. This season leaves you wanting more of him.

Renji and Byakuya has minor roles in this season but the series sets you up to be ready to see more of them in season 2. The small introduction of these two was great because it leaves you wanting more.

OVERALL

Overall, Season one of Bleach is just memorable. It can still be current in this day and age. The story is just great and entertaining. The characters are all unique in their own way. You can grow to love the characters. It is a perfect anime for many anime lovers. This would be an anime I would introduce to anyone that wants to get into the anime world. This is a must watch. After you watch season one, you will want to continue on to season two. I know I did and I’m currently watching season two now. Hahah

Thanks for reading.

Which Bleach characters are your favorite?

      1. I agree I think the problem with this series is that when it caught up with the manga, you had months of filler. If I remember right before the Hueco Mundo arc there was almost a 2-year filler time till the manga got farther and the main story in the anime resumed. They used the fillers to give some characters more development.

  1. I agree, the first season of Bleach is just great and memorable. The characters are interesting, there’s enough action, the comedy moments mostly work and fit in, and all and all it is just fun to watch. It is definitely one I have some major nostalgia for but rewatching season one is always a good time.
