REVIEW

Now, I have mentioned before I am not a fan of live actions. Either they cast the wrong people or the storyline is completely different than the manga/anime. I decided to take a chance with Netflix’s Bleach movie.

STORYLINE

I wasn’t sure how they were going to narrow down the story into an hour and forty minute movie. They followed the first season of the anime and the first few volumes of the manga. The approached they’ve chosen was good. They showed the introduction of Ichigo and Rukia. They showed how Ichigo received his soul reaper powers. Then, the story told of Rukia disobeying the soul reapers Code and facing execution.

Overall, the story made since and it didn’t leave you wondering about too much. They gave the viewer enough information to understand the overall basis of Bleach. Even if the viewer hasn’t watched the anime or read the manga they know enough.

CHARACTERS

I did like the casting of Sota Fukushi as Ichigo. He was just as hot as Ichigo. Besides that, he didn’t really embrace the angry, hot tempered character I know Ichigo to be. This Ichigo had more charm, which I didn’t mind. He did have a bad attitude and hot temper when he was fighting. I did like his fighting, it played really well on screen. He also grasped the drive Ichigo has when fighting. He never gives up.

Hana Sugusaki as Rukia was casted well for looks. The character itself, I was a bit disappointed. They had Rukia too serious. In the manga and anime Rukia had her funny and corky moments. This Rukia was serious through the whole movie. There were minor things that bothered me. Like when she drew her pictures to explain to Ichigo about Hollows and spirts, he didn’t comment about how bad her images were. Those were the little funny moments of the character. Rukia would usually punch him or physically harm him. She wasn’t my favorite character in the film.

As for the minor cast members, I wasn’t disappointed at all. They did some good casting. I did like the character of Uryu Ishida, he looked and acted just like him. The Renji character is more wild and cool, but this Renji was more settled but not bad. Byakuya was just as serious as the character in the manga and anime. He did well.

As for the special effects for the Hollows, those were my favorite parts. They looked real good and scary.

PACE

The pace of the film was good. There were no slow or boring moments. It all came through well. It kept a good pace to understand the story and also the action scenes were at the right moments.

OVERALL

Overall, it is an entertaining film. I was very skeptical since it was a live action, but If you are a Bleach fan, it will not disappoint. The special effects were really good. The pace of the film is good. The action is there and the fight scenes are extremely good. I will give it a thumbs up.

  1. I also think they did a pretty good job with this. They didn’t try to shove too much into the film and the story they tell makes sense. Sure there’s plenty of stuff left out but realistically they couldn’t possibly have covered everything so I’m glad they chose to focus on one part of the story and tell it well.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the movie.
