Spring 2018 anime – fav and least fav

This season I have been watching a good amount of anime. Some I was super excited came back on, others I am enjoying watching for the first time. Check out my thoughts below on ten anie so far.

Anime: My Hero Academia Genre: Adventure, comedy, fantasy, Shounen

Izuku Midoriya dreams of becoming a super hero but was born without any superpowers in a world where it’s the norm. His favorite super hero All Might discovers the passion in Midoriya and shares his powers with him. He enrolls Midoriya into a High school that trains students to become superheroes.

I have fallen in love with this series since I first started watching it. So to have season 3 out just made my life better. There is more problems for the heroes in training. Deku (Midoriya) is still the Shounen who will never give up on his dream to become the best super hero. I love the relationship amongst the classmates. The villains are coming out the woodworks which I am super happy. The villains are even better and I love it. I am obsessed with Shigaraki. So far I am very happy with this season.

Anime: Tokyo Ghoul Re Genre: Action, Horror

Tokyo Ghoul Re is a sequel to Tokyo Ghoul. It follows Haise Sasaki who has been assigned a certain mission with his team known as the Quinx. They are a team of CCG investigators who are half human and half ghouls created by the CCG. While on his mission Haise battles his inner demon known as Kaneki who wants to be released.

If you didn’t read the manga then you may be a little lost. I know some people I have spoken to about Tokyo Ghoul Re were a bit confused because the season starts without really explaining the connection from the second season. But I do have to say I am happy with the season, the villains are the best. I am such a villain cheerleader I can’t help it. I am not a fan of Haise (Kaneki) because he is kind of lame. I loved Kaneki better. I do like the inner fight Haise has with himself to not become Kaneki. Overall it is still entertaining, the fight scenes are pretty epic.

Anime: Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online Genre: Game, Action

It follows a girl Karen Kohiruimaki who always felt different than others in the real world. She found it hard to make friends with girls her age. Her world changes once she is introduced to VR and Gun Gale Online. While she is in GGO she feels alive and her true self, but can she make friends in GGO?

This was a surprise for me. I do like Sword Art Online but usually after a few episodes I get bored. But this SAO is pretty awesome. Lenn is such an interesting character. Her little body and her speedy feet helping her to defeat the other Gun Gale Online players is pretty cool. Her partner M is a silent killer and I like it. They were a cool duo. The show is so fast pace and fun. I haven’t gotten bored yet. I am always looking forward to what will happen next. I have to say it is really good.

Anime: Food Wars: The Third Plate Genre: Competition, Comedy, Food

Food wars follows a boy named Sōma Yukihira who grew up in his father, Jōichiro Yukihira’s restaurant. His father taught him all about cooking and they would compete against each other in cooking battles. Every time Sōma would lose. Hahah One day Sōma’s father receives a job to cook abroad and around the world. So he closes shop and then enrolls Sōma in to an elite culinary school where only 10% of students manage to graduate. Here at this school Sōma meets many student who are all skilled at cooking. Many of them each specializing in something specific for cooking such a meat, curry, Italian cuisine and etc. While in the school the kids are faced with many cooking challenges and battles as well. You witness Sōma developing as a chef and reaching his goal of becoming better than his father one day.

I have to stay the first half of season 3 was not the best. But this second half they def stepped it up. The council vs the students is a good dynamic to the show. You are definitely rooting for the underdogs. Yukihira is still his awesome self and to watch him help his dorm mates is pretty cool. One negative thing I have to say about the show is the food is not as good looking as it usually looks. Surprising to say but my mouth isn’t watering when I’m watching this second half of season 3.

Anime: Hinamatsuri Genre: science fiction, supernatural, comedy, slice of life

One day while in his apartment Yoshifumi Nitta a Yakuza member has a mysterious girl appear. She has telekinetic powers and is named Hina. Natta ends up taking care Hina and we follow their adventures together.

This is not the best show at all, but it has a slice of life feel to it. I am not a fan of slice of life but this show is funny. It really has no point to the storyline but it is entertaining. The two main characters Hina and Nitta are a funny duo. They are completely different in life and personality but to have them together is just funny.

Anime: Losterage Conflated Wixoss Genre: Drama, Game, Psychological

Homura returns to her childhood hometown Ikebukuro. She starts to attend high school but doesn’t fit in. She sees other kids are playing a card game called WIXOSS and decides to learn to play. She hopes this will help her get friends. She buys a deck from the card store and opens the pack. A girl on the card begins to move and speaks “welcome selector”. A selector are players chosen to battle for 5 coins that holds all their memories. Every fight they lose they lose a coin. Every fight they win they gain a coin. If they win all 5 coins they can leave the game. If they lose all 5 coins then they lose their memories.

This season of Losterage is going good. It’s not amazing or anything. I do like the first season better. This season they changed a few things with the game. The game is bringing back the selectors who fought in season 1 to fight yet again. It’s till entertaining but again it’s not amazing.

Anime: Persona 5 Genre: Action, Fantasy, Supernatural, Seinen

At Shujin Academy there are a group of vigilante students who use their psychic powers to eliminate corruptive desires within people’s hearts.

I literally watched this show because the main character was super cute. At first it seemed kind of interesting but then it started to get a bit annoying. Jumping from world to world and stopping criminals ugh become kind of repetitive. Again the main character is hot. That’s why I’m still watching hahah

Anime: Devil’s Line Genre: Dark Fantasy, Vampire

Anzai who is half devil (vampire) is part of the shadowy police task force saves college student Tsukusa from an attack by a devil. Anzai continues to protect/guard Tsukasa after the attack. They begin to fall for each other and it tests Anzai’s devil side to not hurt her.

At first I thought this was going to be good because it was a vampire genre. I’m all for vampires. But it took a turn when it turned into a romance anime. The annoying oblivious girl who is always in danger falling for a vampire. Ugh as if this story hasn’t been told already. I’m not here for it.

Well, those are my thoughts for the half way mark. What are your thoughts on the season so far???

  1. I am looking forward to watching My Hero Academia and Wixoss when the season ends, as I am a fan of both shows. Shame that the Persona 5 anime sucks, because the game is excellent. Your experience with the Devil’s Line anime mirrors my own with the manga. I bought volume one thinking it was horror or action, only to discover it is romance (and not a very good one at that.)

  2. MY HERO ACADEMIA – totally agree with you, esp. as been in anticipation for the UA crew to get their asses handed to them again… but this season currently has taken it to a whole another level!!! One Punch Man is slightly different in the sense it makes sense that the main protagonist can not get hurt (apart from his pride)… but in MHA… its fantastic see the vulnerabilities of the UA students of Class A be pushed to the point of no return… Looking forward to seeing more Eng dub for this current season to be released in the next few months… Def one of the top series to be watching at the moment..

TOKYO GHOUL RE – again another fav great to see come back… though I agree with you again around the disjointed flow through from S2 to S3 with how the MC has lost his initial persona and has taken on a more tamed version of his previous self… It will be interesting as I sense the story is still yet to unravel more as “Kaneki” fights to come to the surface as well as his former comrades from his cafe days are just waiting for the right moment for him to resurface… and take him back…

SWORD ART ONLINE ALTERNATIVE – GUN GALE ONLINE – one of my top 5 Anime of all time the SAO series has continued to give me a sense of joy… though I have not seen this latest series as of yet (as I only watch eng dub)… so just waiting patiently… but I am kind of getting glimpses through playing the online iOS app version of SAO Online Memory Defrag which as revealed some bits of the new anime… Cant wait!!!

FOOD WARS – 3RD PLATE CONTINUED – again another great series to look forward to, Eng dub isn’t due to be released until later this year… so looking forward to that… esp. more escapades of the MC Souma and his rambunctious crew…

HINAMATSURI – now wasn’t sure what to make of this series… very different and you had to watch a few epi to get the flow of the story line… great nonsensical/ slapstick series if you just want to blob and have a laugh about things that don’t even matter…

LOSTERAGE CONFLATED WIXOSS – I omit I haven’t heard of this series before (or even its previous one as I believe it doesn’t have an eng dub as of yet).. but may check it out based on your review…

PERSONA 5 – now enjoyed the first series that came out way back when… a bit spinny in the concepts that it produced… I was kind of looking forward to this latest series… but may reconsider based on your review…

DEVIL’S LINE – now Vampire series have been done to hell… in some form or another… though I wasn’t sure how to take this one…. a bit slow to start things off… but it definitely gets interesting… and I am always keen to here American VA – Adam Gibbs and Luci Christian do there thing in whatever show they are a part of… though I hear what your saying about this series… I think it still has promise… and I am a bit of a sucker (no pun intended) when it comes to romantic love interests etc… It will be great to see how the story pans out to determine who are the true culprits behind the recent attacks… I am also keenly interested to know more of Anzai’s past… and what his link is to Johannes Kleeman… though I kind of already worked out the conspiracy that is taking place to give ‘devils’ a bad rep more then they already have… Jury is still out on this one… but so far I’m enjoying it…

    Other worthy mentions:
    – Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-
    – Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits-
    – Dorei-ku The Animation

Just started the following and so far enjoying each of these series… unfortunately with eng dub it can take sometime for releases to come out….

Once again great to have you back… look forward to more of your adventures as well as your reviews…

  3. I’m really liking Hinamatsuri, Darling in the FranXX, and Space Battleship Tiramisu this season. 🙂
I haven’t watched My Hero Academia because my spouse refuses to watch popular shows. 😛 Maybe I’ll watch it on my own…

  4. I’m enjoying My Hero Academia now that it has gotten going but m favourite this season is probably the Full Metal Panic return. WIXOSS is doing fine as is Steins;Gate and Cardcaptor. Probably one of the shows I am surprisingly enjoying is Space Battleship Tiramisu. I still don’t know why I like it and yet I’m having quite a bit of fun with it. Though for just kind of relaxing and happy anime I’m enjoying Tada Doesn’t Fall in Love and Rokuhoudou Yatsuiro Biyori.
